Today we are going to review the work that we have done so far in Art History, and start exploring more specific ideas within our chosen area.
There will be some new people joining our class today. We will introduce our selves (your name, your school and where it is, one random fact about you, and a favourite artwork). It's important that we connect as a group if we are to work as a knowledge building community, so please try to share as best you can and make people feel welcome.
But first of all, what does teaching and learning look like in art history.
Your experience of learning might be an individual thing, where the teacher gives you the information, you learn it, you present it back. All very individual and internal.
In art history this year we are no longer going to be teachers and students. What do I mean by this?
My role will be 'thinking coach', yours will be 'co-curators of ideas'.
Take a minute to think about what this looks like to you. Share in this padlet, and then will have a class korero and I will explain further what thinking coach and curators of ideas is all about.
Visible learning. When our ideas and questions are put out there in the knowledge building community they are there for anyone to work on and improve. Anyone can ask the big questions and anyone can work on researching any of the big questions.
A few principles to guide us:
In Knowledge Forum, we are going to work on 2 views:
Once you have added your initial ideas, try to reason through your ideas. This will involve finding authoritative sources that might explain your idea or shed new light on it. It could be a visual or a quote or a recount from memory.
Then try to work on the ideas others have shared.
We are trying to 'build' our knowledge together so here are some pointers to get you started
- do you have another interpretation/perspective? Share this to add to our idea diversity.
-What needs explaining? What new questions do we have relating to the big question? Asking questions helps us to improve our ideas
-“Praise” state what you think is a good idea, a helpful piece of information, or a point you agree with and how this is helpful for you This helps to identify the ideas that the group might want to focus on
-“Question” ask a question that will prompt you and the others to think deeper about the issue, or a question to help clarify a point Asking questions that delve beneath the surface help to progress our inquiry
-“Propose” suggest a new idea, new information, new strategy, or new approach to solve your current problem of understanding This helps us to develop our discourse
We'll finish by roundng up as a class what our focus needs to be for the coming week.

- We might play different roles (researcher, questioner etc), but everyone has a role to play (community diversity)
- Anyone can and should advance (work on) any ideas that are put out there in our community (communal responsibility)

The second view we will work on will be exploring the big ideas in our chosen area.
I will create this once we have made a choice as a class about our area of choice for the year.We'll finish by roundng up as a class what our focus needs to be for the coming week.
