Over the week 1st - 7th March

Kia ora art historians.

Yesterday we talked in class about our roles in art history and how we will be moving from being students and teacher to Co-Curators and Thinking Coach. Check out the discussion we had in a padlet.

I also elaborated on the principles that should guide our knowledge building:
  • All ideas are valid (diversity)
  • All ideas are improvable (we improve thinking through progressive inquiry into the big question)
  • We might play different roles (researcher, questioner etc), but everyone has a role to play (community diversity)
  • Through discussion new ideas emerge (discourse)
  • Evidence is important (authoritative sources)
  • Everyone is responsible for growing the knowledge (epistemic agency)
  • Anyone can and should advance (work on) any ideas that are put out there in our community (communal responsibility)
We will continue to touch on these in class - don't worry if your mind is a bit boggled at this stage.


I also spent time talking about different ways that we can contribute to knowledge forum. 
It can be difficult to figure out where to start, but the main thing to remember is that we are trying to 'build' our knowledge together.

- do you have another interpretation/perspective? Share this to add to our idea diversity.

-What needs explaining? What new questions do we have relating to the big question?Asking questions helps us to improve our ideas

-“Praise” state what you think is a good idea, a helpful piece of information, or a point you agree with and how this is helpful for you This helps to identify the ideas that the group might want to focus on

-“Question” ask a question that will prompt you and the others to think deeper about the issue, or a question to help clarify a point Asking questions that delve beneath the surface help to progress our inquiry

-“Propose”  suggest a new idea, new information, new strategy, or new approach to solve your current problem of understanding This helps us to develop our discourse



Check out some amazing examples of knowledge building that happened in class this week. I really love how you are starting to bounce your ideas off of each other.



So what is our focus for this week?

There are a number of new people in our class. If you are new I will send a list of icebreaker activities out to you. Please try to make it a priority to work through these. They are designed to make us more comfortable with each other as a class. If you have been with this class since the beginning please try to make everyone feel welcome by replying to their posts in our community/

Getting to know each other will be an ongoing thing.
You'll notice that our welcome page on Knowledge Forum has a number of 'get to know you' type questions. When you are having a brain block in the other views spend some time chatting to each other on the welcome page.

You will spend this week working on 2 views; Why do Humans make art, and The Renaissance and Values.

Our knowledge building work will be an ongoing conversation. Use the prompts I mentioned above to help you respond.

With why do humans make art we are going to try to shed more light on ideas. Can we test ideas by finding evidence that agrees or disagrees. Can we ask new question that you might have after having had some think time and a chance to read articles that people had added, if you find people's posts helpful, why so and what piece can you add to the puzzle. This will be onngoing discussion to advance our ideas.

With the 'Renaissance and Values', have a look at the resources on my website and any other relevant resources you find.

We are trying to  build a bit of a picture of what the Renaissance was and what was important in this time.

 As always we will catch up with how we are and what is on top for us We'll have a go with Socrative . I've got a quiz set up about meanings. Let me know how you like it as a revision tool. We will have a chat about our strong and weak points, which artists do we need to look at as a class? Our VC 05/08

As you come into the call can you please sign in then add to: What is on top? KF - externals style KF - externals meanings KF - externals context We will keep coming back to these to build up our knowledge base for externals. This is your chance to build up some resources that you can draw upon if you are surprised by the exam question. We will focus on building on our ideas to ask 'why' and 'how', as this will support M and E level thinking. Knowledge Building is a good approach for this as it much easier to ask these questions in the context of a conversation. Madison and Hazel's questions are a really good example of this.  By special request, we will play a Kahoot or two. Let me know which revision tools you find helpful and I can plan around this. Art History VC 23/09/20

 Kia ora all, How are we all? -to some of you For those of you who are working on the internal and not sitting the art history external/s this week is a natural ending point to your course with the assignment being due on Friday. My grand plan is to get marking sorted this weekend so that my moderator has all of the holidays to look at your work. All going well I should have marks back to you in week one of term four. Online courses can often have an abrupt ending when students go on study leave or complete their internal programme ... I wanted to give people a chance to reflect on how they've grown as a learner and the skills or mindsets they'll take with them.
