Today in Art History 22/07/20

How are we? What is happening in our world? One good/interesting/tricky thing?

How are we feeling in general about the theories module?

Take a few minutes just to reflect on your progress with your research and overall understanding. Share back with the class, reflecting on what your overall understanding/progress of your chosen theory now that you have explored a couple of artworks. What has been helpful for you?

Any questions about the upcoming assessment (or anything else)? Don't panic if nothing comes to mind. You can ask them in the chat during class, or verbally at the end. I will try to put a minute or so aside at either end of the lesson for this.

Today we will be honing our ideas about the texts.

It is important to realise that with the Texts standard, you are unpacking someone else's thinking and how important/significant it was.

I've been thinking about the kinds of texts we choose. What do you think makes a useful text? The clarifications say 'Texts must be about art; at the appropriate level for students and provide students with sufficient scope to explain and evaluate the ideas and views expressed by authors.' This is still quite broad. Which texts have you found to be really useful? Why? Try to summarise in one to two sentences:

  • Who wrote it?
  • What angle did they take?
  • What were their key messages?
We'll take 5 for this. Reflect on these questions and share with the class your most helpful text.

I will go through a presentation about the marking schedule and comparing NA to E.
It is important to note:

Anayzing our own texts:

I’ve added some prompts at the top of the Texts padlet, all of these paraphrase the marking criteria.
Have a look at them, and your work thus far on texts. Use the prompts as a checklist.
What do you know about your texts so far. Which of the prompts do you think you have covered off? Which prompt Q’s need attention? Are there any prompt Q’s you have kind of covered, but could add depth to?
We’ll share back with the class where we are at and what will be important to work on next with your texts.
We’ll then spend 10-15 mins building on existing notes, using the prompts as a guide.

How did we find that? Thoughts, challenges, questions?

Working on our ideas about theories

We'll spend some time building on our ideas about the theories. You could use this time to add anything you've come across that has strengthened your understanding of the theory/artwork, adding to the big questions that are dotted around the padlet, anything you need to firm up your understanding of ...

Over the week:

Make sure you are up to date for theories
Tag me into anything you want feedback on (I am still plodding my way through your research to provide general feedback about your work)
Develop your ideas about texts to the point where you are able to answer to some extent:
  • the author's point of view. What is their stance about art and what lens are they viewing it through?

  • The author's interpretations about art? What is important to them and what are their big ideas about art?

  • How significant were the ideas and interpretations of the author?

  • Using Evidence. (At the very least for achieved, you will use "supporting evidence from the texts." For Merit and Excellence you will use evidence from other sources.)

Next week you will share with the class a comparison of two texts, making sure to answer the above questions. Do this well and you should only need to slightly polish up your work for the assessment.
Ask questions during the week about Texts, if you have anything that you want to have clarified, are hesitant about etc.

Questions, about anything?

I will also check out the chat for questions.

Art History VC 23/09/20

Kia ora all, How are we all? -to some of you For those of you who are working on the internal and not sitting the art history external/s this week is a natural ending point to your course with the assignment being due on Friday. My grand plan is to get marking sorted this weekend so that my moderator has all of the holidays to look at your work. All going well I should have marks back to you in week one of term four. Online courses can often have an abrupt ending when students go on study leave or complete their internal programme ... I wanted to give people a chance to reflect on how they've grown as a learner and the skills or mindsets they'll take with them. Add your reflection here  Maybe do this as you join the call so that you have something to do as everyone else is connecting. We'll then have a bit of meta chat about this. I'm going to poll you on how you are feeling about your work in art history (assignment or externals). I'll then open up the floor for q...

Our Google Meet 21/02/19

21/02/19 Admin: Have we got set up with our netnz address yet? Here is  a guide for how to do it  and here is a  video  I recorded of setting up my netnz to forward to my regular mailbox, so I don't have to keep track of 2 emails. Sorry I was figuring out how to do it while I was recording, so please be patient I did get there in the end. You will need the netnz address primarily to access the Google+ community (Google will make it so that you can only access a community if you are from the same education domain as the owner e.g. netnz). How I'm organising my blog. As a research team which area of art history do we want to focus on? We need to pick whether we want to focus on Late Renaissance or Early Modernism as a group. We'll discuss this as a class. Getting to know each other.  Review  the work that we've done so far. Where in the world. Explain your location to the class and why you identify ...

Our Google Meet this week.

I would like to start using screencastify to record our google meets so that we can refer back to discussion if that is ok with you. I would keep them in a google drive folder that is accessible just to us. Today's recording in particular would be shared with my HoD who appraises my teaching each year. Today will be a bit admin-y as there is a bit to cover in terms of what we need to be working towards NCEA wise. Starting with what's on top for us . What is happening in our worlds and where we are at with our research into the values.  Please share some interesting discoveries and how they have helped your understanding of the big picture.  What has been helpful for you (on the website, on KF or some other sources?  (NB - when you click on the link, scroll down to the red padlet). We will then spend a bit of time adding to Knowledge Forum . This could be adding research you have been  doing as a note. Or new questions that have come up after doing research...
