We will keep coming back to these to build up our knowledge base for externals. This is your chance to build up some resources that you can draw upon if you are surprised by the exam question. We will focus on building on our ideas to ask 'why' and 'how', as this will support M and E level thinking. Knowledge Building is a good approach for this as it much easier to ask these questions in the context of a conversation. Note that the views now display the key ideas you might be examined on in December

Some general feedback from derived grade exams

Generally I am really happy with what people wrote. There are a few things that marking the exams highlighted for me:

-We need to work on using the most accurate art history terminology that we can when describing the artworks. e.g. using words like 'idealised', 'naturalism', 'chiarascuro', 'sfumato' etc. This was done really well with Venetian art, and was a bit more patchy for other art works.

This is a requirement in all of the exam prescriptions, as it helps to show your close understanding of the artworks. Check out the specifications: Style, Contexts, Meanings.

-Where people had taken the time to plan out their response (which I could see at the beginning of the exam script), they kept to the key points of the question and built up to a higher-level response.

-Understanding was pretty strong for venetian art works, which were pretty recent in peoples memories, but was a little more sketchy for artworks that had been studied earlier in the year. We need to review these!

I want to create a study repository of images that students could use for the meanings and contexts exams, for the meanings and contexts that could come up. Today we will build up a bank of images, and then come back and build on written justifications as to why these would be good images to use.

Meanings:

Style:
(For style you have to use images from the resource book, but we do need to get ultra familiar with key artworks by the artists).

Contexts:

During the week we will research Bronzino, Mategna, and Pontormo. 

The idea is to research an artwork and summarise the style (which style from the prescription are they characterised by? how can you tell?), meanings (relating to the 5 big meanings you could be examined on), and the context within which it was made (which big context from the prescription influenced it, and how much was it influenced by that context) We will repeat this over the next few weeks till we feel super familiar with their work.
