Art History VC 14/10/2020

 Term 4 here we are. How has the year gone by so quickly?













As always we will catch up with how we are and what is on top for us. One or two of our students who were focusing on internals and have now completed them, will also be dropping in to say goodbye properly at the start of class. Online classes can often feel like they end abruptly so it will be nice to acknowledge the end of a course when people have been working together all year.

Then I thought we would put together a plan for this term. The artists that we need to focus on, the areas where we have some knowledge gaps. Check out this padlet for a reminder of the artists in the prescription and the class website for the key meanings in the Renaissance.

We will have a chat about our weak points, which artists do we need to look at as a class? Which meanings do we need to look at more closely?

Then we'll make a start on some group research to cover off the artists and meanings we need to look at - with the plan of sharing back to the class next week. You should research through the lens of the exams you are preparing for (What are the key meanings? How do you know? What influenced those meanings?)

We'll also look at style. Before we jump into the style research lets discuss the key differences between style and meanings.

Both of these we'll work on over the week and share with the class the following week. We'll continue to work on these as we build up to exams.

Try to treat these as exam writing practice and a chance to figure out where your weak points lie.




We'll also do some collaboration around the influence of context. None of you are sitting the contexts exam however a sound knowledge of contexts is important for higher grades in both meanings and style.

Over the week continue to work on our shared research into styles and meanings.

To get ideas for artworks to research you could look through the padlets below which have artworks relating to particular meanings and styles. They are a work in progress that I get students to add to each year during their exam prep. Feel free to add relevant artworks.



(Here are some Padlets I have put together in the past to help students to study a range of artworks for the exam) During the week you should try to pick out an area that you know you need to work on and make notes about particular art works.

Classical themes : Neoplatonism and Humanism

Christian Stories and Themes. The lives and roles of saints

As you come into the call can you please sign in then add to: What is on top? KF - externals style KF - externals meanings KF - externals context We will keep coming back to these to build up our knowledge base for externals. This is your chance to build up some resources that you can draw upon if you are surprised by the exam question. We will focus on building on our ideas to ask 'why' and 'how', as this will support M and E level thinking. Knowledge Building is a good approach for this as it much easier to ask these questions in the context of a conversation. Madison and Hazel's questions are a really good example of this.  By special request, we will play a Kahoot or two. Let me know which revision tools you find helpful and I can plan around this. Art History VC 23/09/20

 Kia ora all, How are we all? -to some of you For those of you who are working on the internal and not sitting the art history external/s this week is a natural ending point to your course with the assignment being due on Friday. My grand plan is to get marking sorted this weekend so that my moderator has all of the holidays to look at your work. All going well I should have marks back to you in week one of term four. Online courses can often have an abrupt ending when students go on study leave or complete their internal programme ... I wanted to give people a chance to reflect on how they've grown as a learner and the skills or mindsets they'll take with them.
